I am a huge fan of pestemals that, surprisingly, after all those years of travels to Greece, I discovered quite recently. A few years ago I went to one of my favorite Greek islands, Folegandros. Not only is the island beautiful, but the property where I always stay—Anemomilos Boutique Hotel—is beyond amazing and run by a wonderful Greek family.
On that visit, the boy showing me to my room pointed to two towels and said: “This one is for the pool (a terry one) and that one (a pestemal) is for the beach.” Hm, I thought, why are they telling us to take that flimsy, thin towel to the beach? But I’m someone who loves order and tries to follow the rules wherever they exist (old school))). So off to the beach we went with a pestemal and—boy—was it a discovery in its own right.
In Greece, with its beaches of rare natural beauty, you often walk quite a bit from where you park to the shore. The heaviest thing in your beach bag? A beach towel—especially when it’s wet.
